Interview with sonic sorcerer Moose With A Scarf

American producer and composer Moose with a Scarf (Anthony Sabatino) has returned with a variation of his energetic EDM track ‘Won’t Let You Go’ featuring singer Lauren Richards, released on the 13th of October 2023. A graduate of Berklee College of Music and USC, he has composed music for over 100 different film, game, and television projects, with Moose with a Scarf existing as his EDM moniker. He has also developed an interactive music app Tabletop Tunes, writing and producing all the music for the application. Read our interview with the multifaceted music-maker below.

Walk us through your creative process?

Most songs or tracks I write start from a concept or overall mood/vibe. Once I determine what the concept is and what I want the song to be, I start hacking at the piano to figure out what melodies, harmonies, and arrangements would best satisfy that. This of course can become a big series of trial and error, but eventually you can get everything organized and together, and make an awesome piece of musical art. I really like the quote from Michaelangelo, “The sculpture is already complete within the marble block, before I start my work. It is already there, I just have to chisel away the superfluous material.” Thats how I work with music, I know there is an amazing piece of music hidden underneath the idea, I just need to unearth it.

What has been the most defining moment of your musical career?

Probably when I produced my cinematic music video for ‘Leshen‘:

This was the most ambitious multi-disciplinary project I’d ever done. I wrote a script, hired actors, booked locations, and with a few friends, we shot and put together a cinematic music video that I don’t believe has ever been done! It was an exciting and exhausting project, and I’m so happy with how it turned out. Definitely one of my favorite music achievements.

What equipment or software are you using the most?

I write and produce all my music in Cubase, and most of my synths are made through Serum, though I also LOVE ChipSynth SFC. A couple years ago we built out a world class studio in our basement, and went all out on the equipment: ATC monitors, JL Subs, Fireface UFX+, and a whole lot of cables!

Whats your performance setup looking like?

For performances I use Ableton Live because I can easily load up and automate all my various synth patches for my different synthesizers within the the software. I’ve recently started integrating laser lights, and Moosebot (my robot DJ) into live performances as well, so that’s brought in additional hardware with a tiny portable PC called Iron Ant that I use to run visual software, and various audio interfaces sending audio everywhere.

Who are your biggest inspirations at the moment?

BT has always been a huge inspiration of mine, not just for his innovative style, but his all around personality. He gets super excited about really esoteric nerdy music and sound design stuff, but also spends a lot of time with his family, focusing on his health, and just enjoying the beauty of life. That really resonates with me, and I love seeing that from artists I respect.

Whats your favourite way to pass the time? Any hobbies?

I love spending time with my family. I have a four-year-old daughter and a two-year-old son, and we love to play Mario Kart together. I also have been getting really into Golf, and will sometimes do chipping practice in the backyard and the kids will help gather the stray balls. I’ve also become a big fan of crossword puzzles, its what I always do before going to bed.

Whats next for you as an artist?

I have a Christmas EDM album coming out around the holiday season of some really fun and quirky Christmas Remixes. I’ve also got a whole lot of other music that I’m working on that I’m excited to share, but the main thing I am focusing on is putting my music out there through my content and sync pitches. I’m also trying to do more live shows, especially with my robot DJ Moosebot. Moosebot has had some technical issues so he is being sent to the Robo-Doctor, but one thing for sure is that 2024 will be the year of the Moose! Lots of live performances hopefully, and some real bangers too!
