Delicate yet defiant: listen to Lilise’s new anthem, ‘You Don’t Own Me’

On November 3rd, 2023, Lilise unveiled her second offering to the world in a single titled ‘You Don’t Own Me’, accompanied by a music video featuring her performing in an opulent ball gown and a pair of Dr. Martens. The UK-based singer-songwriter has recorded her debut self-titled EP while still studying for her A-Levels and working towards studying clinical psychology at university.

Inspired by the likes of Taylor Swift, Sara Kays and Maisie Peters, Lilise manages to conjure up her own distinctly recognisable sound. She writes her music on piano and guitar, creating songs that fuse balladry with hints of folk, pop and Americana. Her most powerful asset is her voice – she is a grade 8 vocal student whose vocal delivery has been likened to that of Billie Eillish.

‘You Don’t Own Me’ is a breakup anthem of self-love and triumph over self-doubt. Crisp production and lush instrumentation allow Lilise’s vocals to soar, saccharine and angelic. A warm, moving bass line, lush, yearning acoustic and electric guitars and rolling jazz drums paint an exquisite sonic picture of her vulnerability as she bares her soul in her lyrics. Keep your ear on the ground for more upcoming releases from this precocious storyteller – she isn’t slowing down any time soon.
