From supporting slots at quaint festivals to headlining world tours – these indie-rock legends have lived it all. The group have just brought out a new album, ‘TPC’, which is arguably their most exciting to date. With renewed vigour, a dash of maturity and a whole lot of attitude, ‘TPC’ marks the dawn of a new Tokyo Police Club era.
To celebrate this new release, we picked some of the iconic moments that led to this moment. Although we couldn’t put down ALL the great moments from TPC’s career (so far!), here are some carefully selected highlights.
1. 2006 – Pop Montreal Festival
2. 2008 – The band released their debut album ‘Elephant Shell’
The four-piece released their debut full-length with Conor Oberst’s reputable Saddle Creek Records and, even though the LP was leaked before the official release date, it was received to great acclaim, with Consequence Of Sound’s review including:
“Tokyo Police Club comes lashing out of the cages with a strong debut and continues their musical journey with another great notch of garage rock indie to add to their catalog. If only Odysseus had a music player aboard his ship, the trip back to Ithaca wouldn’t have been so hard. “
3. 2010 – Tokyo Police Club’s second full-length, ‘Champ’, is released
Signed up to Mom + Pop music for their second LP, the boys of TPC used their growing momentum to produce one of their best pieces of work with record producer Rob Schnapf, who’s worked with a host of other excellent musicians such as Elliot Smith, The Vines, FIDLAR and Beck.
4. 2011 – Video for ‘Wait Up (Boots of Danger)’ was nominated as best indie video of the year by MuchMusic
The track was taken from TPC’s ‘Champ’ album and was directed by Mike Juneau and Kyle McCreight. Currently sitting at over 1.3 million views, the video features the band performing the upbeat track and many adorable and heartwarming shots of dogs.
5. 2012 – Touring with Foster The People and Kimbra
Although the band had played at a slew of festivals over the years, including prestigious fests Coachella, Lollapalooza, Bumbershoot, Glastonbury Festival, Reading and Leeds Festival, Roskilde and Bonnaroo Music Festival, this was an important run of shows for Tokyo Police Club, teaming up with US indie pop-stars Foster The People and songstress Kimbra. Shows played included massive cities including Montreal, Philadelphia, Boston, Detroit, Toronto and Chicago.
Also known as the album that ‘almost never was’, as the band was on the brink of a breakup before its creation, Tokyo Police Club bring us their freshest cuts for this year’s brand new release. Currently, the band are on tour, see dates below.
