With a voice the texture of honey and a timbre as vintage as a 20-year-old bottle of red, Lilith Merlot evokes a classic soul feeling in her latest EP Shades Of Blue – a project that drives at the heart of heartbreak itself, exposing the singer’s vulnerable side in a haze of Jazzy piano accompaniment and forthright lyrics; Lilith has something to say, and she will say it in the way she knows how: through the music.

She says: “I started writing the songs on this EP after a very unexpected and painful breakup. I found myself not being able to talk about it, so I sat down behind the piano and wrote my way through it. Some of the piano ballads on this EP are quite vulnerable, but you can clearly hear a shift to a lighter shade of blue toward the end. For example, in the groovy, soulful Pop song White Lies, in which I sing: ‘I refuse to remember you in this dark shade of blue, you can take it all from me, but I’m keeping the memories.’”
Taking the lead, the single ‘White Lies’ sees Lilith confront her ex, set to an easy pace. That is, the record doesn’t come off as heavy as you might expect, being that it is a record dealing with a rather tough subject. Rather it glides along matter-of-factly as if to indicate that Lilith has accepted the painful experience and is now simply letting it go.
